STAG’s Chair Meets the Queen at Buckingham Palace

STAG's Chair, Christina McDonagh, meets the Queen at Buckingham Palace 25.03.2014

STAG’s chair, Christina McDonagh (pictured with the Queen), and Community Development Worker, Ann-Marie O’Brien, were invited to Buckingham Palace last week (25th March) for a reception held in recognition of the contribution made by Irish community to the United Kingdom.

Many Irish Travellers fought in both the First and Second World Wars for Great Britain and have made other contributions through for example working in the railway, agriculture and construction industries. Despite negative media coverage, Travellers continue to make a positive contribution to the UK in a variety of different fields and industries.

Both Christina and Ann-Marie felt hugely honoured to be invited to the palace and found the Queen very welcoming. Ann-Marie was impressed by Princess Anne’s knowledge of and interest in the Traveller community. Other guests included One Direction’s Niall Horan, former world-champion boxer Barry McGuigan, X-Factor’s Louis Walsh and the Tenor Priests.

This month Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins will be making a state visit to Britain following the Queen’s historic visit to Ireland in 2011, which was the first time a British monarch has visited the Republic of Ireland.
